What’ve you enjoyed most about your area of study? Was there a particular discovery, new skill or way of thinking, or insight that you found especially valuable? Please share an example from your favorite class or experience.

The literature classroom has become a place where I feel such an immense joy for learning and discovering. Majoring in literature taught me how to think critically and multi-dimensionally, with both a technical and humanistic lens. What I have particularly loved is how diverse my literature classes have been, ranging from analyzing indigenous films to reading Dante. It has truly broadened my horizons and understanding of what the field of literature encompasses. My favorite experience has been working with Professor Wiebke Denecke on my thesis, which is focusing on the works of Nobel Prize winner Han Kang and how they relate to trauma, mental health, human fragility and flourishing.

How does the knowledge from this field, or your interest in it, combine with your other major or minor studies at MIT?

As someone who wants to be a leader in the healthcare space, I have gained both the human-centered communication and problem solving skills by being a double major in literature and management. Analyzing texts, stories, and characters in the literature classroom enhanced and changed the way I read and break down cases in my Sloan classes. From writing essays to giving presentations, I have grown my public speaking and communication skills as a result of combining my learnings and experiences from both of my majors.

An MIT education includes study in the scientific, technical, social science, arts, and humanities fields. How do you think that wide range of knowledge and perspectives will be valuable to you – for your career success and for your enjoyment of life?

I truly believe that at the heart of human connection and relationships are storytelling and effective communication. Majoring in the humanities has allowed me to enhance not only my academic communication skills, but how I interact and bond with the community around me. My double major journey here at MIT has allowed me to develop a holistic perspective that accounts for both the clinical and patient-centered sides of health and medicine. I know that the combination of technical and humanities knowledge I have gained at MIT will set me up for success for my post-MIT endeavors.

What are your plans for the future?

I will be going into consulting and joining Berkeley Research Group (BRG) as an Associate in their Health Analytics practice. Building upon this consulting experience, I hope to attend business school and eventually become a hospital CEO. My goal is to help enhance operations of health systems to improve patient outcomes and advocate for the importance of mental health and health equity for underserved communities.
