Examines foundational films that explore and challenge the principal ideas regarding the human condition developed by existential philosophy. Through close reading of philosophical and film texts, students grapple with cinema’s capacity to develop and question existential themes of freedom, authenticity, death, alienation, absurdity, and the creation of meaning. Includes films by Bergman, Tarkovsky, Fassbinder, Kurosawa, Pontecorvo, Resnais, Sembene, and others.
