This course studies some of the most important social conflicts in the Spanish-speaking world through fiction, poetry, essays, film and popular culture. We will examine the Mexican and Cuban Revolutions; the Spanish Civil War; the military dictatorships in Argentina and Chile; the drug wars in Mexico and Colombia; indigenous rights in Guatemala and Peru; women’s and LGBT movements across the region.
